Hybrid workers switch machines constantly, and every handoff exposes the weak points of a cheap dock. We spent 45 days testing a dual-monitor KVM dock on a real home-office desk, and the difference between “works” and “works well” came down to details nobody puts on the box.

The biggest offender was EDID emulation — or rather, the lack of it. Without it, switching machines makes windows shuffle, resize, or jump across monitors, and the display can flicker while everything settles. A good dock keeps both machines convinced they're still connected to the same screens, so switching feels instant.

Then there's power. Stable USB-C Power Delivery matters more than the headline wattage, but the headline still counts: the unit we tested delivered a full 100W, keeping a 16-inch laptop charged through a full workday with peripherals attached. No brownouts, no warnings about slow charging.

Network handoffs mattered too. The always-on Gigabit Ethernet port meant video calls survived machine switches without drops — no reconnecting to the meeting, no “can you hear me” loop.

One caveat for Apple users: base M1/M2 MacBooks are limited to a single external monitor, so check your machine's specs before planning a dual-display setup.
